Led by Cardiff-based drummer-composer Patrick Barrett-Donlon, the Quartet focuses on the repertoire of the earlier pioneers of jazz and the genius of their music, arrangements and playing.
Patrick Barrett-Donlon is a British-Irish musician, drummer, composer and educator based in Cardiff. He has also played at venues and festivals spanning the UK and Ireland, including Pizza Express in Soho and the Brecon Jazz Festival.
His quartet features Huw Llewellyn (trumpet), Benedict Stephens (bass) and Newman Tai (piano). Their programme highlights the masterful compositions and arrangements of rhythm section players who led their bands from ‘the back’.
They will be celebrating the music of Bennie Moten, Walter Page, Count Basie, Papa Jo Jones, Ray Brown and Max Roach amongst others.
Expect an evening of exciting arrangements, soulful melodies and stomping swing.
